A SignUpGenius Alternative for Youth Program Registration
SignUpGenius is the tool most volunteers reach for first, because most volunteers already know it. It's genuinely good at what it was built for. The question worth asking is whether what you're doing is that thing.
What SignUpGenius is built for
Slots. Snack schedules, parent volunteer shifts, conference time slots, potluck assignments, field cleanup crews. Someone creates a list of openings, people claim them, everyone gets a reminder. For that job it's excellent, free, and familiar to every parent in your group.
Where season registration is a different shape
Registering thirty kids for a spring season isn't a slot-claiming problem. It's a roster problem, and the two need different things:
You need a roster, not a list of claimed slots. Names, age brackets, who's paid, who's signed the waiver — organized as one authoritative list you can print and take to the field.
You need the money to reconcile itself. Fees collected outside the sign-up tool mean cross-referencing a payment app against a sign-up sheet by hand. That reconciliation is the part registrars describe as the worst hour of their season.
You need signed waivers attached to registrations. Not a separate paper stack, and not an honor-system checkbox — a signature with a timestamp, stored and exportable.
You need capacity handled per age group. U-8 filling up shouldn't block U-12, and the waitlist should promote itself when someone drops.
You can approximate all of this with a sign-up sheet, a payment app, and a spreadsheet. Plenty of programs do. The approximation is what costs the evenings.

What about the free tier?
SignUpGenius has a free tier, and free is hard to argue with. Worth noting what "free" costs in practice: fee collection features generally sit behind paid plans or per-transaction charges, and the reconciliation work you do by hand has a real cost measured in evenings.
RosterSignup is free to organizers with no tier at all — the service fee is paid by the registering parent, disclosed before they pay. Whether that tradeoff suits your families is a fair thing to weigh, and some programs simply absorb it by lowering their price slightly.
